Newcomen atmospheric engine

The museum has a working replica of a Newcomen atmospheric engine.

He was responsible for the introduction of Newcomen atmospheric engines, which were used to drain the mines, the first being installed in 1716.

In order to provide the water flow over its 9.1m diameter water wheel, a Newcomen atmospheric engine was installed.

This was a Newcomen steam engine (more accurately a Newcomen atmospheric engine) used to pump water from a coal mine.

A Newcomen atmospheric engine was installed at Bardsley Colliery in Ashton-under-Lyne in about 1760.
