This pattern of nonlethal injury is sometimes called hydropic change or vacuolar degeneration.

Vacuolar degeneration is most prominent at the onset of the disease and precedes motoneuron death by two to three months [ 15 ] .

Muscle biopsy may display several common findings including; inflammatory cells invading muscle cells, vacuolar degeneration, inclusions or plaques of abnormal proteins.
