Just like the Bonin Thrush, the Bonin Grosbeak probably succumbed soon after 1830 to habitat destruction and predation by the introduced mammals.

Possibly as a result of the introduction of alien animals, at least three species of birds became extinct: the Bonin Nankeen Night Heron, Bonin Grosbeak a finch, and Bonin Thrush.

Kittlitz's Murrelet, Kittlitz's Rail, Kittlitz's Thrush and Kittlitz's Plover are all named for him.
